History
The Maine Coon is one of the largest domesticated cat breeds, renowned not only for its impressive size but also for its adept hunting skills. This breed was a favorite in the late 19th-century cat shows but faced near extinction early in the 20th century with the introduction of long-haired breeds from abroad.
Origins of the Breed
The exact ancestral origins of the Maine Coon are shrouded in mystery. It is speculated that they may descend from Norwegian Forest Cats or Siberian Forest Cats brought over by settlers in New England.
Various folklore also surrounds their origin. One popular tale involves Marie Antoinette, the Queen of France, who, during her attempted escape from France, allegedly shipped her beloved Turkish Angora or Siberian cats to the United States. Though she never made it to America, her cats supposedly reached Wiscasset, Maine, safely and interbred with local short-haired breeds, contributing to the lineage of the modern Maine Coon. Another myth amusingly suggests that Maine Coons are the result of breeding between domestic cats and raccoons; however, such a crossbreed is biologically impossible as they are distinct species.

As you’ve figured out, Maine Coon Cats are one of the largest domestic breeds of cats. Hence, their nickname “Gentle Giants”. They grow extremely fast, but mature slowly. A male Maine Coon kitten can double in size (not weight) from 1-8 months. But wait....they aren’t done growing! Maine Coons grow until they are 4-5 years old. Some Maine Coons have a stomach pouch that hangs down from their bodies. This is normal and it doesn’t mean your cat is fat! Even some females exhibit this trait. Males average 15-25 lbs depending on the size of their bone structure. Females, are smaller and average 12-17 lbs. If the female has a large skeleton, she can top the scale at 18-21 lbs.
Before introducing a new kitten or cat to your home, it is crucial to prepare adequately. Designate a small room for your new pet to isolate from other household animals for the first two weeks. This isolation is essential as it allows your kitten or cat to adjust to the new environment comfortably before meeting other pets.
During this initial period, focus on allowing your kitten or cat to become familiar and comfortable with you and your family. Once acclimated, you can gradually introduce them to other household animals and additional rooms, tailoring the pace to your pet's comfort level.
Please note that although your kitten or cat will arrive from our cattery litterbox trained, transitioning to a new environment may require some adjustment. To assist with this, we recommend placing your pet in the litter box every two hours until they begin using it consistently on their own. This proactive approach helps establish a routine and eases their adaptation to your home.
Maine Coons are often referred to as "gentle giants" and are recognized for their high intelligence, which makes them relatively easy to train. They exhibit loyalty to their families and while they are cautious around strangers, they are not aggressive. Their independence means they are not overly clingy. Despite not typically being lap cats, Maine Coons have a calm nature that allows them to get along well with dogs, other cats, and children.
An interesting trait of the Maine Coon is their fascination with water, which some believe is inherited from their seafaring ancestors. Known for their vocal nature, Maine Coons often express themselves through yowling, howling, trilling, chirping, and other sounds, making them one of the more vocal domesticated cat breeds.
